In the Holy Bible, James 5:16 informs us to “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (KJV). However, this has been simplified into a smaller unit in the New King James Version. It reads “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”
Availeth (avail) means to make use of an opportunity or chance before you. It could also mean when an individual chooses to do good to earn good benefits.
Also, the New International Version says that Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” It didn’t end there The New Living Translation also adds that “the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”
The Amplified Bible also translates it as “the heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much when put into action and made effective by God. It has tremendous power.”
What Does ‘The Prayers of the Righteous Availeth Much’ Mean?
The Bible explains to us that, we must confess our sins to our Lord and other people also and those confessions will heal our souls. It is said that both the confessor and the hearer will both experience healing.
There is always a feeling of relief in both the confessor’s and the listener’s hearts because they know the confession will eventually atone for their sins. At that moment, their conscience is clear and their hopes are up and their prayers will be heard by the Lord.
“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer” (1 Peter 3:12). When we decide to do good, we are in a perfect place for God to heal our wounds and hear our prayers. When we openly and honestly confess and repent from our sons, the Lord will give us a listening ear (Psalm 34:15). He is always ready to help us if we are also ready to tell Him our sins and repent from them.

Prayers Of The Righteous
2 Corinthians 4:16 “Lord, I pray for divine strength and spiritual endurance right now. Even though my outward self is perishing, my inward self is renewed daily. Lord, I believe that You make all things new, therefore each day I am renewed by Your Holy Spirit. I will not become distracted by my situation, instead, I will use this pressure to help me become more like You and remain on the path of righteousness”
Proverbs 21:21 & Psalm 112:6 “Righteous God, I want to be more like You so help me actively pursue righteousness and love. I do not want to waste my time being like the world because the world can only offer me temporary, unsatisfactory things. I choose to seek You because I know that You offer life, prosperity and honour. Your Word says that the righteous will never be shaken and will be remembered forever. I thank You for Your righteousness.”
Matthew 6:33 & Psalm 51:10 “Awesome God, I pray that I do not seek materialistic things nor become tempted by the desires of my flesh. I declare that I will seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness because I know that everything else that I need or may want will be given to me. I pray that righteousness motivates all of my actions, not self. I pray that You create in me a clean heart and renew the right spirit within me.”
Proverbs 21:3 “Heavenly Father, I pray that my behavior and my lifestyle reflect You. I know that acting out of righteousness and justice is more acceptable to You than sacrifice for wrongs that are repeatedly committed. I pray that I remain a righteous being, doing things that are acceptable in Your sight. I pray that when I fall short, I do not remain in a place of unholiness, I declare that I will always pursue the paths of righteousness”
Philippians 4:8 “O Lord, I pray that my mind focuses on what is true, honourable and worthy of respect. I pray that whatever is right and confirmed by Your Word; whatever is pure and wholesome is what I fixate on. I declare that all admirable things and of good repute are at the centre of my mind. May all things that are praiseworthy be the foundation of my daily meditation.”
