Soldiers are not part of security of Speaker – Kan-Dapaah to critics

The Ministry of National Security has said that news of the soldiers’ pullout from the Speaker’s Office was misinterpreted by a portion of the Ghanaian people.

Soldiers are not included in the security arrangements for the Speaker and Members of Parliament, the Ministry said in a statement.

They are only available on a need-to-know basis and in line with established state regulations, the Ministry noted.

The statement said that the speaker’s security has not been compromised and that no adjustments have been made.

“The Ministry of National Security wishes to state unequivocally that, contrary to the aforementioned misrepresentations, all necessary resources, including logistics and people, have been supplied to ensure the Speaker’s complete security.

It’s worth mentioning that, for the first time since 2017, the Speaker’s and Members’ security preparations have been greatly improved.

Additionally, it should be noted that members of the Ghana Armed Forces are not included in the security detail for the Speaker and Parliament, since Parliamentary protection is supplied by the Ghana Police Service. Typically, each request for particular agency assistance is handled on a case-by-case basis in line with declared state norms.”

The explanation comes after Member of Parliament for Banda and Deputy Minority Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, stated that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ordered the withdrawal of troops assigned to the Speaker’s Office.

The Member of Parliament for the Defence Committee said that the news of his dismissal shocked the Minority in Parliament.

“This came as a huge shock to us,” he added, stating that “now is the moment for us all to band together and work on security.”

As a minority, we are taken aback by the government’s decision to remove the speaker’s military detachment. The speaker is positioned third, and even the EC chair employs around 10 military troops. Therefore, if the Speaker requested four and they have been on duty for more than a year, what has changed? It raises concerns about security.”

“President Akufo-Addo retracted the military detachment; he is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces,” he stated.

On Monday, the Minority will convene.” The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has said that the four soldiers who have been removed from the Speaker of Parliament’s Office were assigned to that position without following due protocol.

As a consequence, the decision was taken to remove them while steps were made to regularize their attachment, according to a statement.

“The under-named military personnel were assigned to the Office of the Rt Honourable Speaker of Parliament without following due protocol,” according to a statement to the Speaker signed by the Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, NP Andoh.

“It is humbly requested that the personnel are withdrawn with effect from 14 January 2022 while efforts are made to regularise their attachment,”
