    What Does Righteousness Mean?

Righteousness is referred to as the perfect holiness for Jesus Christ. It is one of the most important attributes of God with the literal meaning ‘one who is right’. No man on earth can be justified by his own actions apart from God’s decree.

Righteousness is, therefore, an important and wonderful gift from God to humans through His act of love for us.

The Righteousness of Man and The Righteousness of God

Righteousness can be seen as a quality of being morally right or true. Your rightness is made according to the conformity of actions with regulations to your society. When we are righteous, it means we’re clean and perfect in the eyes of the Lord we serve.

Our perfect nature goes across character (nature), conscience (attitude), conduct (action), and command (word). God is the ultimate Lawgiver and our righteousness is based on His standard (Isaiah 33:22).

No man can be righteous through his own efforts. It’s God’s attribute that He decides to gift to whomever He wants. Humans are created to use all means at their disposal to pick a side instead of following God’s. God’s righteousness can never be compared to the righteousness of man. Our righteous deeds are “nothing but filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6).

What is Righteousness in the New Testament?

In the Bible, Acts 10:35 tells us that “whoever fears God and works righteousness will be accepted by God.” Righteousness as words was first used in. Genesis 15:6.

The verse doesn’t communicate about the Ten Commandments or God’s law but we are told that Abraham believed God’s promise and counted his belief as righteousness. Righteousness doesn’t begin with what is right or what is wrong.

    Bible Verses About Righteousness

Romans 5:1-5 ESV “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him, we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Matthew 5:20 ESV “For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Isaiah 33:15-17 ESV “He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking on evil, he will dwell on the heights; his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks; his bread will be given him; his water will be sure. Your eyes will behold the king in his beauty; they will see a land that stretches afar.”

1 Peter 3:14 ESV “But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled,”

2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

1 Peter 5:10 ESV “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.”

Romans 10:4 ESV “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”

2 Timothy 2:22 ESV “So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”

1 John 5:18 ESV “We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.”
