ICAO denies Bawumia claims that Ghana Card can be used as an e-passport
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has opened up that there are some ‘incorrect’ media reports that they agreed that Ghana’s National Identity card (Ghana Card) is equivalent to an electronic passport.
They explained that the decision can only be made by Ghana’s government as ” “it is the sovereign right of each individual state to decide upon its entry and exit requirements and the documents that need to be presented by those traveling to and/or from its territory”.
The United Nations revealed on Friday, February 11 that it is not its role to make the use of a member’s ID card for international travel in place of a passport.
“Any decision to accept such alternative travel identity document is made by the receiving state itself.”
This news dropped after the celebration of the completion of Ghana’s effort to make the Ghana card an e-passport by the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the ICAO.
We congratulate 🇬🇭#Ghana for its decision to join the ICAO Public Key Directory (PKD). It is a central repository for exchanging the information required to authenticate ePassports.
